Job Description

This position is contingent upon contract award:

SOS International Ltd. (SOSi) is seeking a Linguist to interpret, translate, and transcribe various communications, documents and audio files from Urdu into English. Candidates will review, translate or transcribe material in a variety of subjects to include: science & technical, medical, legal, media, humanitarian, economic, political, diplomatic military, criminal, or counterterrorism issues.

Candidates will also need to have expert cultural knowledge of Afghanistan as most of their work will center on source materials from this country. Successful candidates will possess language skills at a minimum of a 4/4/4/4 level (ILR scale) during translation and interpretation activities.

Essential Job Duties:

•Interprets, translates, or transcribes reports, memos, correspondence, media, audio, or oral communication that range from simple to technical and complex in nature both from the source language into English and from English into the source language
•Captures facts and abstract language, identifying intended implications and nuances in all work products
•Captures socio-cultural elements in text by choosing words and expressions that generally adhere to target language norms and means of expression specific to a subject
•Compiles gists and summarizations and identifies and accurately summarizes factual points as well as abstract concepts
•Triages several documents and isolates pertinent factual and nuanced information
•Reviews audio or video material transcribes/summarizes with high degree of accuracy and expression

Minimum Requirements

•Minimum of a 4/4/4/4 (listening/speaking/reading/writing) score on Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) scale) with excellent command and comprehension of one or more regional dialect(s) in the source language and English
•Specific cultural knowledge obtained from work experience, research, or having lived in the country of Afghanistan
•Bachelor’s degree in English, the source language, linguistics, or another related discipline; graduate degree preferred
•Three or more years of work experience in translation, document exploitation, media monitoring, open source foreign media analysis or similar fields
•Excellent computer skills (MS applications, internet research)
•Strong research ability
